Children of CL vets

Postby PEI912 » Wed Jan 11, 2012 9:49 pm

Hi Folks,
My father just recently settled a case with the VA for his cancer which was determined to be caused by the C.L. water. He asked one of the VA folks that he dealt with if there's any possibility that mine & my siblings fertility issues could have been caused by our father's contamination even though we were not born until a few years after his time in C.L. The person he spoke to said that it could be hereditary and that we should definitely pursue it. My question is, have other children born of Vets contaminated by the water also had health problems? This information was just given to me in the last few days so I haven't had time to research much. I'm not sure whether or not we'll pursue this or not, but it would be interesting to maybe get answers to something that has puzzled and upset us for so long. Thank you for your time.

PEI912 - this is a very good question. I have recently begun to wonder about this. In fact, I told my daughter yesterday to ask her doctor if the miscarriage she had 2 1/2 years ago and the recent development of polyps could be tied back to me being stationed at Camp Lejeune from '82-'84 and TAD there in '85. I do not know how long the chemicals can be carried in our bodies and/or passed along.

If you hear anything from other sources, please post it here so we are aware. I am starting to reach out and ask questions myself, which is why I visited today.

Thank you for your reply. I'm sorry for your daughter's loss. I have not pursued this as yet, partly because I'm not sure where to begin. However, if I do learn any information that I think would be helpful, I will share it.

hi, i,m tony and i was in the marine corps at cl at the time of the bad water, and have some very bad health problems, my son was born at that time with highland membrane disease, which caused cerebral palsy. he almost didn,t make it. i am so far behind on all the information about the bad water, and am terrible with a computer. would someone please help me with some advice and info about what we shoud do? me and my son need to know if our problems were caused by this water at cl. i am not qualified to go to the va even though i spent seven years and nine months in the marine corps. so any suggestions would be great.

http://www.tftptf.com/New_ATSDR3/GAO-on-DOD-cleanup.pdf

Starting at page 9, gives you a basic understanding of the laws and regulations concerning exposure to environmental hazards. As for your assertion concerning VA, you are incorrect that you have no recourse there with respect to your illnesses. Especially if you served during a time of war period. There is no substitute for your going through the information referenced on tftptf and learning about what was done to the base water and air, and you are correct that it is a time consuming task. There are people involved with the site who can help guide you through some of this when you have developed specific questions, but no one can do the work for you. Not even an attorney. They can help, but it will still take lots of work on your part.

A good place to start is to use the time lines provided by Mike Partain and to spend a good deal of time in reading all of the posts in the various segments of this bulletin board. I know how daunting it seems at first, it is daunting and it took me nearly a year to get to where I had a pretty good handle on the issues. It does not require a great deal of computer skills, but it does require a great deal of dedication to the task in the end.

Welcome aboard, Marine, and good luck to you and yours!

My name is Mary Zimmerman Rogers, my father was stationed at Camp Lejeune several times from 1961 through 1974. We lived in base housing in Tarawa Terrace I and II. I just found out about the water contamination and I am trying to find out how I can determine if the health issues of my entire family are related to the contamination. My mother suffered from severe migraines, heart problems, blood problems, stomach cancer and died at 53. My oldest sister had blood circulation, heart problems, liver problems, Crohn's Disease, several miscarriages and her only child died from cancer at 19 and she died at 45. My younger sister had problems with her kidneys and died from organ failure at 44. My younger brother had blood disorder at birth (born at the base hospital) and had to have a complete transfusion and had had a high red blood cell count, heart problems, and died at age 43 after having a stint placed. At age 45, I had a heart attack and had emergency quadruple heart by-pass surgery and had trouble with infection that caused me to lose my breast bone. I have a severe problem fighting infections and healing from any wounds takes at minimum of a yr. I have had fertility issues and have never been able to conceive due to low hormone levels. With all my family dying so young, (and coming close myself) my father told me about the water contamination and we would like to see if this was a contributing factor. I do not even know what my first step should be... who do I go to for tests (if anyone) Any help or info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Hi Mary, my name is Chris Chene I was conceived and developed inside my mother at Camp Lejeune. I Have Kidney cancer and other aliments because of my exposure to the poison water. My older bother died from stomach and intestinal problems, my older sister has blood cancer, my other sister has lupus, my father was stationed at Camp Lejeune from 1961 - 1964. This Marine base has destroyed my family, so I can understand what your family has gone through scene The Came Lejeune Health Care Bill has been signed by the President, us children of marines can get help from the V,A. too, so contact your local V.A Administration near you. I hope this helps you.

I was conceived about 10 years after my Dad left Camp Lejeune (1956-1958). I was born with 2 extra thumbs (not skin tags!). I also have had fertility issues (miscarriages) and ended up adopting a child from Guatemala. My brother was born with digestive issues in 1964. His only son was born with a club foot. What are the odds of having your only 2 children & your only grandchild being born/developing health issues from a family that has no known genetic tendencies? My dad also was told today that his right kidney will have to be removed because of the tumor & cysts that were found in late June. Our issues seem small compared to what I have heard about other families, but it still makes me mad to know that our lives were manipulated by the marines. I know of no studies or information to support that the chemicals could permanently alter the male's sperm, but if I had to guess, I would say that years down the road they will be linked.
